Caring for your wood carving

hploonlarge.JPG (13438 bytes)

All carvings have been treated with high quality wood oil (the brand I use is BEHR "Rawhide") and may be placed outdoors. Rain won't hurt them but prolonged exposure to direct sunlight will require two or three additional applications of oil to prevent fading and cracking. Apply with sprayer or brush and let dry.

Don't use a surface sealer such as Verathane or varnish. It will shatter and peel as the wood expands and contracts.

Remember that the wood was a living tree and continues to act like it's still alive. It will shrink and contract in dry weather. It will swell and expand during wet weather. The oil acts on your carving like a moisturizer acts on your skin. It keeps it nice. Your carving loves it. Talk to it as you spread it on. Say nice things. Enjoy each other.
